  • Pronunciation: Danish royals

Since I know that non-Danish often have issues when they try to figure out how some of the Danish royal names are pronounced – I pestered a Danish friend of mine, Stine, into helping me make an audio-file so you all could enjoy it.

Well, only that it’s not one audio file. We ended up making two. One for just the brief names, they are known as in every day conversations. And one for their full names.

    With many thanks to Stine.

Today, Queen Sonja and Crown Princess Mette-Marit hosted a tea party at the Palace in Oslo. The guests were 15 immigrant women, from various organizations, and the occasion was the International Women’s Day, which was yesterday. It is the first time the Palace is hosting such a gathering.

  • Pronunciation: Norwegian Royal Names

As I’ve noticed that non-Norwegians may sometimes have problems with how the Norwegian royal names are pronounced – here is an audio file with the Norwegian royal names.

  • King Harald in Bergen

Today was the installation of Halvor Nordhaug as the new Bishop of Bjørgvin diocese. He is taking over from Ole D. Hagesæther, and is the 35th bishop in the history of the diocese, which goes back to the reformation.

As the head of the Church of Norway, King Harald was present at the installation. A picture of the King and the newly ordained bishop walking out of Bergen cathedral can be seen here.

  • Pictures of Marie leaving the exhibition

    The car arrived fairly early.

(The chauffeur did sort of look like Prince Joachim, well, enough so that the school children standing next to me thought he’d come to pick up his wife.)

  • Marie and UNESCO

Princess Marie will be opening UNESCO’s conference and exhibition “Pictures from the Future” at the National Museum tomorrow. According to Berlingske, this means that the Princess has decided to take an interest in UNESCO’s work in Denmark.

At this time, the communication consultant at the royal court, Lene Balleby, states that: “Princess Marie has shown an interest in UNESCO’s focus areas and the engagement that the organization has shown. Later, it will be clarified, more prescisely, which tasks the princess will be engaged in.”

Whether or not this means that it will be her first official protection or not, is a bit unclear from the above. I suppose time will tell.

The exhibition Marie will be opening is a part of UNESCO’s Associated Schools programme

Oh, and she will allegedly be giving her first full speech in Danish.

  • Summer cruises for the Dannebrog 2009

Every year the royal yacht Dannebrog has its summer cruises in Denmark, either with the Queen and Prince Henrik, or with the Crown Prince and Crown Princess. This year’s programme has been published.

  • Name that child…

With Prince Joachim and Princess Marie of Denmark’s first child together due in May – and most likely the name won’t be coming until the Christening, as per the Danish traditions, it may seem a bit premature to start guessing now. But the speculation of it is part of what makes it fun.

  • Crown Prince Haakon in the Czech republic

Crown Prince Haakon of Norway is in Liberac in the Czech Republic to cheer on the Norwegian participants in the World Championships in Skiing. Today, he got to observe Norwegian gold and silver in the sprint, and award flowers and some positive words to the winner, Ola Vigen Hattestad. Vigen Hattestad will have dinner with the Crown Prince tonight.

At the same time, when the engagement was announced, the Crown Prince was badgered for a comment, and replied:  “Oh, well, that’s nice.”
