Book review: The Uncommon Reader

The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett. (First published in 2006).

The Uncommon Reader works on the premise of Queen Elizabeth II suddenly entered the moving library of Westminster – and out of politeness (One cannot offend the lending librarian, after all) borrowing a book. It gets the ball moving, and Her Majesty is suddenly hooked on reading…

Unfortunately the rest of the Palace does not quite approve of the leisurely pursuit, and the Prime Minister even less.

Suddenly the Queen goes from asking people at events where they come from and how they’d got there, to what was their latest read. (Amusingly enough, anybody answering Harry Potter got the reply that it was something the Queen was saving for a rainy day.) It doesn’t go well with the planned system and structure around her.

A thoroughly enjoyable and quick read, the book speculates on the life behind the scenes at the Palace. Even after putting it down, I’m still smiling when I think about it.

  1. I actually loved the possibilities that the ending contained. The speculation over what to come 😉
